Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

Fourteen multiple-choice questions on world knowledge for travellers: this A2 quiz asks which tower stands in Paris (Eiffel Tower), which currency Japan uses (Yen) and what the capital of Australia is (Canberra). Pupils read the instruction, "Answer the following questions about travelling", and choose one of four options each time. Landmarks, countries, cities, languages and food all appear. An answer-key page is included.

Pedagogical guide

The questions test general knowledge in English, so pupils meet travel vocabulary (currency, landmark, fjords, safari, carnival) through facts they may already know. It works as a diagnostic before or after a unit on travel, not as a test. Check three items before you mark: Machu Picchu is near Cusco, not in the city; Sweden, Iceland and Finland also have northern lights, but only Norway is the classic fjord country; and Lasagna is also spelt lasagne in British English.

Suggested procedure

  1. (5 min) Ask pupils which countries and cities they would like to visit and why.
  2. (15 min) Pupils answer the fourteen questions alone, circling one option each. Allow a short guess when they are unsure.
  3. (7 min) Check with the key page. For each answer, ask one pupil to say one more thing about the place.
  4. (3 min) Pupils write one new question about a country of their choice, with four options.

Adaptations

[S] Show a map or a few photos of the places first, and let pupils work in pairs on the questions they find hardest.

[A] Pupils choose three places from the quiz and write two sentences about each, starting "It is famous for...".

Materials & prerequisites

One printed sheet per pupil, a pencil and the key page. A world map on the wall helps. Pupils should know the question words and the verb to be.
