Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

By the end, A1- students can name 12 common sports from pictures. The one-page sheet shows 12 illustrated sports and a word box at the top (swimming, tennis, judo, rugby and eight more). Students write the right word on the line under each picture. There is no answer key: check against the pictures.

Pedagogical guide

This is a pure vocabulary task with no grammar point: use it to revise sports words students have already met, not to introduce them. The word box is a closed set (12 words for 12 pictures), so students can finish by elimination, which makes it a low-stress worksheet. Note that football is shown with a round ball and hockey is field hockey.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Read the 12 words in the box aloud; students repeat.
  2. (2 min) Label the first picture together on the board.
  3. (8 min) Students label the other pictures alone, then compare in pairs.
  4. (4 min) Check as a class: point to a picture, a student says the word and spells it.

Adaptations

  • [S] Students label the pictures they know first, then use the box for the rest. Write the first letter of each word on the board.
  • [A] Students write one sentence for three sports, for example I like tennis.
