Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
Ten figures, ten words: this A1 matching sheet pairs 4th with fourth, 8th with eighth and 1st with first, from 1st to 10th. Pupils read the instruction, "Match the ordinal number with its words", and draw a line from each figure to its written form; the right-hand column is in a different order. An answer-key page is included.
Pedagogical guide
The sheet trains the link between the figure and the spelling, and the spelling holds the traps: fifth (from five), eighth, and ninth, which drops the e of nine. The endings -st, -nd, -rd and -th are also worth pointing out. Use it when ordinals are first met, before dates, or as revision. It asks for reading only, so it makes a calm start to a lesson.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Write 1st to 10th on the board and say them together. Ask which ending each one takes.
- (10 min) Pupils match the figures and words individually, in pencil.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key. Each pupil underlines the word they found hardest.
- (5 min) Dictate five of the words; pupils write them from memory.
Adaptations
[S] Do 1st, 2nd and 3rd together, since they are the irregular ones, then let pupils match the other seven.
[A] Pupils write three sentences about their day using first, second and third.
Materials & prerequisites
One printed sheet per pupil, a pencil and the answer-key page. Pupils should know the numbers one to ten.
