Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

A word search on the seven continents. Pupils find Asia, Africa, Europe, Oceania, Antarctica, North America and South America in a 12 by 12 letter grid, where words run across or down only. The printed instruction is "Find the seven continents hidden horizontally and vertically in the grid below." The two-word names are hidden without the space.

Pedagogical guide

A word search makes pupils scan for letter patterns, so it practises spelling and word shape rather than meaning. Pupils probably know the continents in their own language; the value lies in the English spellings, especially Antarctica, Africa and Oceania. The two-word names are the sticking point because the space is missing, so tell pupils before they start. There are no diagonal or backward words.

Suggested procedure

  1. (4 min) Say the seven continents aloud and have pupils point to them on a map.
  2. (3 min) Model one find (Asia) on the board and explain that two-word names have no space in the grid.
  3. (10 min) Pupils search alone and ring each word they find.
  4. (5 min) Check with the solution on page 2.
  5. (5 min) Pupils say which continent a country belongs to ("France is in Europe.").

Adaptations

[S] Give the first letter and the direction (across or down) of each word.

[A] Set a time limit, then ask for three sentences of the type "... is in ..." about countries.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of page 1 per pupil and a coloured pencil or highlighter; page 2 shows the solution. A world map is useful.
