Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This sheet on fruit is a crossword with eight written clues, such as "A long yellow fruit. Monkeys love it." for banana and "A yellow fruit. It is very sour." for lemon. Following the instruction "Read the clues and write the names of the fruits in the puzzle", pupils write each fruit in the grid, choosing from a word box. Letters shared by two words help them check their answers.
Pedagogical guide
Reading the clues is the real task: each one is a short description (colour, shape, taste, where it grows) in simple sentences, with no pictures. The crossing letters give instant feedback, because a wrong word clashes with its neighbour. The word box lowers the difficulty. Use the sheet after the fruit words have been taught orally, as revision.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Describe two fruits aloud (It is long and yellow.) and let the class guess.
- (3 min) Read the instruction and one clue aloud; find its word in the word box together.
- (15 min) Pupils work alone or in pairs, in pencil.
- (5 min) Check with the solved grid on page 2.
- (3 min) Pupils write a one-sentence clue for another fruit and read it to a partner.
Adaptations
[S] Write one answer in the grid on the board to show how crossings work, and let pairs work together.
[A] Pupils cover the word box and solve the puzzle from the clues alone.
Materials & prerequisites
One sheet per pupil, a pencil and an eraser. Page 2 shows the solved grid: keep it. Pupils should know the eight fruit words orally.
