Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This sheet on nationalities shows ten flags, such as those of France, Brazil and Japan, each with two nationality words to choose from (French / British, Italian / Brazilian, Japanese / Korean). Following the instruction "Look at the flags and tick the correct word", pupils tick one word per flag. The only writing is a tick.
Pedagogical guide
Pupils link a flag to the matching nationality word, which is easy to confuse: Italian appears in three items and Turkish in two, so a repeated word gives no clue. Point out the capital letter that nationalities take in English and the common endings (-ish, -an, -ian, -ese). Use the sheet once pupils know the countries orally; it checks recognition of the written words.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Draw or show three flags; the class says the country, then the nationality.
- (3 min) Read the instruction aloud and do the first flag together.
- (8 min) Pupils work alone in pencil.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 2: pupils say each country and nationality aloud.
- (5 min) In pairs, one pupil names a country and the other says the nationality.
Adaptations
[S] Write the ten countries in a jumbled list on the board as a reminder.
[A] Pupils write three sentences in the pattern Marie is from France. She is French.
