Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

By the end, A1 students can recognise, spell and use family words (mother, grandfather, cousin, aunt and others). The worksheet has four tasks: unscramble eight family words, write six more family words, complete ten descriptions such as "Your father's mother is your ________.", and write two more descriptions. A teacher answer key is on a second page.

Pedagogical guide

The tasks go from recognising (letters to put in order), to recalling (task 2), to reasoning (task 3: read a relationship, name the person), to creating (task 4). Do task 2 before task 3: the task 3 answers include words such as uncle and cousin, and students should find their own words first rather than copy them. The descriptions use a chain of possessives ("Your uncle's son..."), so check that students read 's correctly before they start.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Ask: "Who is your mother's mother?" Elicit grandmother. Ask for one more example.
  2. (6 min) Task 1: students unscramble the eight words on their own, then check in pairs.
  3. (5 min) Task 2: students write six more family words. Collect the words on the board.
  4. (10 min) Task 3: students read each description and complete it. Check with the answer key.
  5. (6 min) Task 4: students write two new descriptions, then swap with a partner who writes the answers.

Materials & prerequisites

Print A4: 1 page for students and 1 answer key page for the teacher. Students need a pencil. Assumes basic family words and the possessive 's.
