Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This sheet on wild animals gives ten pictures, such as an elephant, a fox and a giraffe, each with its letters jumbled (haelnetp, xof, grfiaef). Following the instruction "Look at the pictures and unscramble the words", pupils write the correct word on the line provided. The picture is the only clue.
Pedagogical guide
No clue is written, so pupils must already know the animal's name; the task then trains the order of its letters. Short words (fox, lion, bear) give a quick start, while elephant, giraffe and iguana test spelling more. Use the sheet after the animals have been taught orally, as revision or for early finishers.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Name some animals aloud or show pictures; the class repeats. Write nothing yet.
- (3 min) Read the instruction aloud and unscramble xof together on the board.
- (12 min) Pupils work alone in pencil.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 2: pupils spell each word aloud in English.
- (3 min) One pupil mimes an animal; the class guesses in English.
Adaptations
[S] Give the first letter of each answer, or write the ten words in alphabetical order on the board.
[A] Pupils write one short sentence about three of the animals (size, colour or where it lives).
Materials & prerequisites
One sheet per pupil and a pencil. Page 2 is the answer key: keep it. The ten animal names must be known orally.
