Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
By the end, A2 students can sort words into groups and say which one does not belong. The theme is school and classroom: the sheet has 5 lines of four words, and students circle the odd one out in each line. An answer key with a short reason for every line is on a separate page. Print-ready A4, in colour and in a low-ink black-and-white version.
Pedagogical guide
This is a vocabulary-sorting task, not a grammar lesson: use it to revise words already taught, not to introduce new ones. The group changes a little from line to line (things you study, school work, things in a classroom, things you read or write), so ask for the reason each time. Ask students to name the group and give the reason aloud: this turns recognition into a short spoken explanation.
Suggested procedure
- (2 min) Do line 1 together on the board: read the four words, circle the odd one out and name the group.
- (6 min) Students circle the odd one out in the other lines on their own, then check in pairs.
- (5 min) Whole-class check with the answer key: for each line, ask for the group, then the reason.
- (optional, 5 min) Students write a new odd-one-out line on the same theme for a partner.
Materials & prerequisites
Print on A4. The answer key is on its own page: keep it back for step 3. A low-ink black-and-white version is included. Prerequisite: the topic vocabulary (school and classroom).
