Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

By the end, A2 students can sort words into groups and say which one does not belong. The theme is jobs and professions: the sheet has 5 lines of four words, and students circle the odd one out in each line. An answer key with a short reason for every line is on a separate page. Print-ready A4, in colour and in a low-ink black-and-white version.

Pedagogical guide

This is a vocabulary-sorting task, not a grammar lesson: use it to revise words already taught, not to introduce new ones. Every line has the same group, jobs, and each intruder is a place or a thing, so students can find it even if some job words are new; let them work those out from the line itself. Ask students to name the group and give the reason aloud: this turns recognition into a short spoken explanation.

Suggested procedure

  1. (2 min) Do line 1 together on the board: read the four words, circle the odd one out and name the group.
  2. (6 min) Students circle the odd one out in the other lines on their own, then check in pairs.
  3. (5 min) Whole-class check with the answer key: for each line, ask for the group, then the reason.
  4. (optional, 5 min) Students write a new odd-one-out line on the same theme for a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Print on A4. The answer key is on its own page: keep it back for step 3. A low-ink black-and-white version is included. Prerequisite: the topic vocabulary (jobs and professions).
