Objective & content
A picture-labelling sheet on shops and services in town. Pupils look at 12 pictures, such as a car wash, a barber shop and a pet shop, and write the name under each one, choosing from a boxed list of 12 words that also holds gym, coffee shop and grocery. The printed instruction is "Look at the pictures and complete with the correct names from the box."
Pedagogical guide
Most of these names are compound nouns (car wash, coffee shop), so the sheet trains the spelling of two-word names as well as their meaning. The box gives all 12 words, so pupils can finish by elimination: use the sheet as a safe first consolidation, not as a test. Expect hesitation on barber shop and grocery.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Read the 12 words of the box aloud; pupils repeat.
- (3 min) Do the first two items together (Hospital, Car wash).
- (12 min) Pupils label the other pictures alone, in pencil.
- (6 min) Check with the key; pupils spell the two-word names aloud.
- (4 min) In pairs, one pupil describes a place ("You can get a haircut here.") and the partner names it.
Adaptations
[S] Write the first letter of each answer.
[A] Fold the box away, then ask for "There is a ... near my home" for three places.
