Objective & content
By the end, A1 students can name family relationships by reading a family tree. The worksheet shows a tree of three generations with ten named people, from Walter and Claire down to their four grandchildren. Students then complete nine sentences such as "Alex is Vicky's ________." with the right family word. A teacher answer key is on a second page.
Pedagogical guide
A person has a different family word depending on who you start from, so every sentence gives the starting person with 's (Vicky's, Alex's). Students find that person first, then follow the lines to the other one. Some answers are plural (parents, grandparents, cousins). Uncle, aunt and cousin are the least familiar words, so check them before the task.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Ask students to name the family words they know. Write them on the board.
- (3 min) Look at the tree together. Find the three generations, the couples and the lines going down to the children.
- (3 min) Do sentence 1 together. Ask: "What is Alex to Vicky?"
- (10 min) Students complete sentences 2 to 9 on their own, then compare in pairs.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key. Students read each full sentence aloud.
