Objective & content
By the end, students can choose the word that means almost the same as a given word. The one-page sheet has 6 picture cards (tiny, sad, beautiful, child, neat, scream); each offers two words, and students colour the one that matches. A Name and Date line is at the top. There is no answer key.
Pedagogical guide
This sheet works on word meaning, not spelling. Teach the idea first: a synonym is a word with almost the same meaning. Some words (neat, scream, lonely) are above a strict A1- level, so pre-teach them with the pictures. The card for sad is the weakest: lonely is the closer match, but afraid is also a feeling, so talk about why. The other five cards have one clear answer.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Explain synonym with the first card: tiny and small. Point to the ant.
- (3 min) Read the 6 main words and the 12 choices aloud; pre-teach neat and scream with a gesture.
- (8 min) Students colour the matching word on each card, alone.
- (5 min) Compare in pairs, then check as a class: students say, for example, tiny = small.
Adaptations
- [S] Students do the first 4 cards only; show each pair of choices with gestures.
- [A] Students write another synonym or an opposite for two cards (for example tiny and big).
