Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
By the end, A1 students can read an analogue clock that shows an o'clock time and match it to the digital time. The worksheet has six clock faces in a 3 x 2 grid. Under each clock, students put a cross (X) in one of four boxes, each with a digital time such as 09.00. A teacher answer key is on a second page.
Pedagogical guide
Every clock shows an exact hour, so the only skill is reading the short hand; the long hand always points to 12. The wrong options are other hours, some of them next to the right one (05.00, 06.00, 07.00), so students must look at the hand and not guess. Use it when students know the numbers 1 to 12, as a first step before half past and quarter past.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Draw a clock on the board. Show 3 o'clock and say: "It's three o'clock." Ask which hand tells the hour.
- (3 min) Do clock 1 together. Show how to put a cross in the correct box.
- (8 min) Students do clocks 2 to 6 on their own, then compare answers in pairs.
- (4 min) Check with the answer key. For each clock, a student says the time: "It's six o'clock."
