Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
A reading-and-matching sheet on places in town. Pupils read nine short descriptions, such as "You can borrow or read books here" and "You get money from here", and match each one to a place name: Library, Bank, Aquarium, Station, Shopping mall and four more. The printed instruction is "Read the descriptions and match them to the places in town."
Pedagogical guide
The clue is a sentence, not a picture, so pupils must read for the key idea (borrow books, see a doctor, catch a train) and link it to a place. The sheet also models the pattern "You can ... here", which pupils can reuse to describe places themselves. Most clues have one obvious keyword; Shopping mall and Aquarium need the whole sentence.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Read the nine place names aloud and check that pupils know them.
- (4 min) Model the first match on the board: underline the keyword in the clue.
- (10 min) Pupils match the descriptions alone, then compare with a partner.
- (6 min) Check with the key; ask which keyword helped for each place.
- (6 min) Pupils write one new clue ("You can ... here.") for a place of their choice; partners guess it.
Adaptations
[S] Do the first three matches together and underline the keyword in each clue.
[A] Cover the place names and ask pupils to name each place from its clue, then write two clues of their own.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per pupil and a pencil; page 2 is your answer key. Pupils should know the nine place names and the pattern "You can ... here".
