Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
A picture-labelling sheet on famous landmarks of the world. Pupils look at nine pictures, such as the Sydney Opera House, Big Ben, the Taj Mahal and the Sagrada Familia, and write the correct name under each one, using a boxed list of nine names that also holds Cappadocia, Torii Gate and Venetian Gondola. The printed instruction is "Look at the pictures of famous landmarks from around the world. Write the correct name under each one."
Pedagogical guide
These are proper names, mostly new to pupils, so the sheet is about recognition and careful copying: capital letters and the spelling of Cappadocia or Sagrada Familia. The box does the work, so pupils can succeed through general knowledge and elimination. Use the sheet to link English with culture rather than with grammar.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Ask which landmarks pupils already know and in which country each one stands.
- (5 min) Read the nine names aloud and drill the harder ones (Cappadocia, Torii Gate).
- (10 min) Pupils write the names alone, in pencil, with capital letters.
- (6 min) Check with the key.
- (5 min) In pairs, pupils choose one landmark and say "It is in ..." with the country.
Adaptations
[S] Start with the five landmarks pupils are most likely to know and tick off each name of the box.
[A] Pupils write a sentence such as "The Taj Mahal is in India" for three landmarks.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per pupil and a pencil; page 2 is your answer key. A world map helps pupils place the landmarks.
