Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
A word search for World Animal Day. Pupils find twelve words in a 13 by 13 letter grid, among them ocean, shelter, mammal, habitat and environment, with words running across or down only. The printed instruction is "Find the words listed below in the grid."
Pedagogical guide
Despite the title, the words are about nature and conservation, not animal names: wildlife, species, reptile, desert, forest, protect. Some are long (environment has eleven letters) and abstract (species, habitat), so the sheet suits a class that has met this vocabulary in an animal-themed lesson. Searching across and down trains letter-by-letter reading.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Introduce World Animal Day; explain species and habitat with examples.
- (3 min) Model finding ocean on the board.
- (12 min) Pupils search alone and ring each word; suggest they tick it off the list.
- (5 min) Check with the solution on page 2.
- (5 min) In pairs, pupils choose an animal and say where it lives ("A panda lives in a forest.").
Adaptations
[S] Give the first letter and the direction (across or down) of six words.
[A] Pupils write a short definition for four words, such as "A mammal is an animal that ...".
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per pupil and a pencil or highlighter; page 2 shows the solution. Pupils should have met the twelve words before.
