Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
A picture-labelling sheet on the everyday places of a town. Pupils look at 12 pictures, such as a house, a church, a park and a hotel, and write the name under each one, using a boxed list of 12 words that also holds buildings, shop and supermarket. The printed instruction is "Look at the pictures and write the names of the places in the city."
Pedagogical guide
This sheet stays with general places where people live, learn and shop. The difficulty lies in the generic words: buildings (two tower blocks), shop and supermarket are told apart by the picture only, and house against buildings needs a moment's thought. Let pupils discuss these items before they write.
Suggested procedure
- (4 min) Read the words of the box aloud; pupils name a place of each kind they know.
- (4 min) Look together at buildings, shop and supermarket and say what tells them apart.
- (12 min) Pupils label all 12 pictures alone, in pencil.
- (6 min) Check with the key.
- (4 min) Pupils tell a partner which three of these places are near their home.
Adaptations
[S] Pupils tick off each word of the box as they use it and start with the six easiest pictures.
[A] Cover the box and add one sentence per place with "There is a ...".
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per pupil and a pencil; page 2 is your answer key. A black-and-white version is available.
