Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
Twelve months, three tasks: this A1 vocabulary sheet starts with scrambled letters such as JNUE (June) and SETPBERME (September). Pupils unscramble all twelve words, then write the months in order from 1 to 12, then answer ten short questions such as "Which month is between March and May?" and "When does school start?". A key page is included; questions d to g are open, so several answers are right.
Pedagogical guide
The three tasks move from spelling to sequence to meaning. Unscrambling forces pupils to look at letters, which helps with the hard spellings (February, August, December). Writing the months in order checks that they know the sequence, and the final questions use the months in context: ordinals (second, last), seasons and festivals. Use the sheet once the twelve names have been heard and said aloud. Questions a to c and h to j have fixed answers; questions d to f and g are personal or seasonal.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Chant the twelve months with the class, then ask which one is hardest to spell.
- (8 min) Pupils unscramble the twelve words and write the months in order.
- (7 min) Pupils answer questions a to j in full words, not letters.
- (5 min) Check with the key page. For the open questions, collect two or three different answers from the class.
Adaptations
[S] Write the twelve months in order on the board for the first minutes, then hide them for the second task.
[A] Pupils add the season for each of the twelve months and write two sentences with in and a month ("My birthday is in May.").
Materials & prerequisites
One printed sheet per pupil, a pencil and the key page. The key follows the UK school year and northern-hemisphere seasons.
