Objective & content
By the end, B1 students can recognise the vocabulary of society and politics and spot the word that does not belong. This short worksheet gives 5 lines of 4 words (election, government, citizen, vote); in each line students circle the odd one out, an everyday word about food or the kitchen. An answer key with a short reason for each line is included. Print-ready A4, useful as a starter or a quick check.
Pedagogical guide
This is a vocabulary-categorisation task with no single grammar point: it consolidates words students already know, it does not introduce them. Use it before a unit on citizenship, institutions or current affairs. The odd words are everyday words, so the challenge is to know the topic words well enough to see the group. In the correction, ask students to say why the word does not fit: this gives a short, natural speaking moment.
Suggested procedure
- (2 min) Read the instruction aloud and do line 1 together on the board.
- (6 min) Students circle the odd one out in lines 2 to 5 on their own, then compare in pairs.
- (5 min) Check as a class: for each line, elicit the odd word and the reason for choosing it.
- (optional, 3 min) Students use the answer key page to check their own work.
Adaptations
- [S] Pre-teach the topic words students know least, give the group name before each line, and do lines 1 to 3 only.
- [A] Students write one more odd one out line on the same topic for a partner to solve, then explain their choice.
Materials & prerequisites
Print on A4 (2 pages: the worksheet and the answer key page). The answer key gives a short reason for each line. A black-and-white version is included to save ink.
