Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This A1 sheet practises vocabulary on verbs of communicating and thinking, with six words such as call, think and know. Under "Read the clue. Unscramble the letters to make a word.", each line gives a clue (for example "To use a phone") and jumbled letters (LACL), and students write the word in the last column. Page 2 is the teacher answer key.
Pedagogical guide
Unscrambling makes students look inside a word, so it suits revision, not introduction: a student who has never met the word can only guess. These clues are abstract (To use your brain) and have no picture, so offer a mime if students are stuck; think and know are easy to mix up, so read both clues aloud.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Mime phoning, reading and thinking, and ask students what you are doing.
- (10 min) Students work alone and write each word in the last column.
- (5 min) Correct with the answer key, one word at a time; students spell each answer aloud in English.
- (5 min) Students choose two answers and write a true sentence with each, for example I read books.
Adaptations
[S] Mime each verb yourself while students choose among the six answers, listed in a jumbled column.
[A] Students write To ... clues for ask and say and swap with a partner.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per student; keep page 2 for yourself. The words must already have been taught.
