Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

This A1 sheet practises vocabulary on places in town and travel, with six words such as airport, library and city. Under "Read the clue. Unscramble the letters to make a word.", each line gives a clue (for example "A room in the house") and jumbled letters (MOOR), and students write the word in the last column. Page 2 is the teacher answer key.

Pedagogical guide

Unscrambling makes students look inside a word, so it suits revision, not introduction: a student who has never met the word can only guess. Most clues say what you do in the place (A place to read books), so they double as speaking prompts; explain that A country road means a road outside town and the answer is road.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Ask students in English where they go on Saturdays.
  2. (10 min) Students work alone and write each word in the last column.
  3. (5 min) Correct with the answer key, one word at a time; students spell each answer aloud in English.
  4. (5 min) Students say where they go during the week, for example I go to the library.

Adaptations

[S] List the six places in a jumbled column so students match each one to its clue.

[A] Students write A place to ... clues for school and park and swap with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

One copy of page 1 per student; keep page 2 for yourself. The words must already have been taught.
