Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This A1 sheet practises vocabulary on the extended family, with six words such as aunt, uncle and granddaughter. Under "Read the clue. Unscramble the letters to make a word.", each line gives a clue (for example "Your mother's sister") and jumbled letters (TUNA), and students write the word in the last column. Page 2 is the teacher answer key.
Pedagogical guide
Unscrambling makes students look inside a word, so it suits revision, not introduction: a student who has never met the word can only guess. The clues for grandson and granddaughter differ by one word (son or daughter), so have students read them side by side; granddaughter has thirteen letters and is the hardest answer.
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Ask students to name the members of their close family in English.
- (10 min) Students work alone and write each word in the last column.
- (5 min) Correct with the answer key, one word at a time; students spell each answer aloud in English.
- (5 min) Students draw a small family tree and label two relatives with words from the sheet.
Adaptations
[S] Let students solve the four short words first, and tell them that both long words begin with grand.
[A] Students write clues in the same style for sister and cousin and swap with a partner.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of page 1 per student; keep page 2 for yourself. The words must already have been taught.
