Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

This A1 sheet practises vocabulary on animals, with six words such as elephant, tiger and horse. Under "Read the clue. Unscramble the letters to make a word.", each line gives a clue (for example "A large cat with stripes") and jumbled letters (REGIT), and students write the word in the last column. Page 2 is the teacher answer key.

Pedagogical guide

Unscrambling makes students look inside a word, so it suits revision, not introduction: a student who has never met the word can only guess. The clues give size, sound or habitat, so students can often guess the animal before rebuilding it; insist that they check every letter, especially in elephant (eight letters).

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Make animal noises and ask students to name the animal in English.
  2. (10 min) Students work alone and write each word in the last column.
  3. (5 min) Correct with the answer key, one word at a time; students spell each answer aloud in English.
  4. (5 min) Each student describes an animal from the sheet in two words, for example big, stripes, and the class guesses.

Adaptations

[S] Show pictures of the six animals and let students match each one to its clue before they unscramble.

[A] Students write a clue for two other animals, such as cat and cow, and swap with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites
