Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

This A1 sheet practises vocabulary on jobs and work, with six words such as singer, actor and office. Under "Read the clue. Unscramble the letters to make a word.", each line gives a clue (for example "A person who sings") and jumbled letters (GRENIS), and students write the word in the last column. Page 2 is the teacher answer key.

Pedagogical guide

Unscrambling makes students look inside a word, so it suits revision, not introduction: a student who has never met the word can only guess. Four clues follow the pattern A person who ... and the answers end in -er or -or; career and office break the pattern, so ask what kind of word each one is.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Ask which jobs students know in English, without writing any on the board.
  2. (10 min) Students work alone and write each word in the last column.
  3. (5 min) Correct with the answer key, one word at a time; students spell each answer aloud in English.
  4. (5 min) One student mimes a job from the sheet and the class asks Are you a singer? until someone guesses.

Adaptations

[S] Write the ending (-er or -or) next to the four person clues, so students only rebuild the beginning.

[A] Students write a clue starting A person who ... for teacher and doctor and swap with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites
