Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
By the end, A1 students can spot the word that does not belong in a group and say why. This one-page sheet has 5 lines of 4 words. Topic: food and drink. In each line, one word comes from a different topic and students circle it (for example car, shirt, bed). Page 2 is the teacher answer key, with a short reason for each line.
Pedagogical guide
This is a pure vocabulary-categorisation task with no grammar point: use it to revise words already taught, not to introduce new ones. The key names the category of each line (fruit, food, vegetables, drinks); students must think about meaning, not just recognise words. Read each line aloud so that reading or pronunciation does not hide the categorisation task.
Suggested procedure
- (2 min) Hand out page 1. Read the instruction aloud and do line 1 together on the board.
- (6 min) Students circle the odd one out on their own. Read the lines aloud if needed.
- (4 min) In pairs, students compare answers and tell each other why.
- (4 min) Check with the key on page 2. For each line, ask for the name of the category.
Materials & prerequisites
Print 2 A4 pages: page 1 for students (one copy each), page 2 is the teacher answer key (do not hand it out). A black-and-white version is included to save ink. Students should already know the words of the topic.
Assessment & extensions
Note the lines that many students miss: they show which words to revise. To extend, students write their own line of 4 words (3 on the topic, 1 intruder) for a partner to solve.
