Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This functional language sheet teaches pupils to suggest things to do (Let's go to the park! Do you want to go swimming? We can play video games.), to say yes (Good idea! Great!), to say no politely and give a reason (Sorry, I can't. I have a piano lesson.) and to agree on a time and a place (What time? Let's meet at two o'clock at the swimming pool.). Pupils read a phone call in which Arlo and Mina plan their Saturday, then find the missing words. By the end, they can make plans with a friend.
Pedagogical guide
Page 1 is the dialogue, with a picture of Arlo and of Mina: it's too cold for the park and Mina has a piano lesson in the morning, so they meet at the swimming pool at two, then play video games at Mina's house, but Arlo can't stay for a film because he has dinner with his grandparents. Pupils find eight missing words in lines from the dialogue. Page 2 has the useful phrases, given in a box, five situations to match to a phrase and six lines to answer by ticking the best reply out of three. Page 3 has a second dialogue, between Teo and Rhea, with six lines to number in order, and a dialogue about a trip to the beach to complete with the five words in the box. The last task is a role-play: pupils cut out the cards and act out a role-play in pairs. Each card has a weekend diary, and the two pupils suggest things to do until they find the time they are both free. Every exercise opens with a worked example. The answer key is included; the role-play is free speaking, and A and B are both free on Sunday morning. The sheet uses let's, can, Do you want to ...? and the present simple.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Ask a few pupils "What do you want to do this weekend?" and write Let's ...! and Do you want to ...? on the board.
- (10 min) Read the dialogue aloud; pupils find the missing words.
- (5 min) Page 2: read the useful phrases in the box with the class; pupils find them in the dialogue.
- (10 min) Pupils match the situations to the phrases, then tick the best replies.
- (10 min) Page 3: pupils number the lines of Teo and Rhea's dialogue, then complete the dialogue with the words in the box.
- (10 min) Role-play in pairs with the weekend diaries: pupils suggest things until they find the time they are both free.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.
Adaptations
[S] Pupils read the dialogue aloud in pairs, one as Arlo and one as Mina, before the tasks.
[A] Pupils write three suggestions for the weekend for a friend.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of pages 1 to 3 per pupil, and scissors for the role-play cards. Page 4 is the answer key and teacher notes: keep it. Pupils need can, the days of the week, the time (two o'clock) and the words for free time and sports. To take it further, pupils plan a class trip day and vote on the suggestions.
