Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This activity sheet is all about ordering food. Pupils learn seven pizza toppings with a picture for each (cheese, tomato, mushrooms, ham, onion, pineapple, sausage), draw their own pizza, and then play pizza shop with a partner. An ice cream for dessert, in four flavours, completes the order. By the end, pupils order politely with I'd like and some ("I'd like a pizza with some cheese and some ham, please.").
Pedagogical guide
Everything turns on one exchange: "What would you like?" and "I'd like ..., please." Task 1 gives the words: seven toppings, each with its picture, so pupils can point and name before they read. Task 2, "Say it!", puts the exchange in a box, with I'd like and some in bold. Task 3 is the heart of the sheet. Each pupil first draws their own pizza in the left circle. Then they play pizza shop in pairs: the cook asks "What would you like?", the customer orders their pizza, and the cook draws it in the right circle without looking. They swap roles, then compare: are the two pizzas the same? The drawing shows at a glance whether the order was said and understood. Task 4, "And for dessert?", adds an ice cream and four flavours (chocolate, banana, strawberry, vanilla) with the model "I'd like some chocolate ice cream, please." Task 5 brings it together in writing: pupils write their order, pizza and dessert, from the starter "I'd like a pizza with some ... For dessert, I'd like some ...". Every task is open, so page 2 holds the teacher notes rather than fixed answers.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Show the toppings and ask "Do you like mushrooms?"; pupils name each topping in Task 1.
- (5 min) Task 2: read "Say it!" together and practise the exchange with the whole class.
- (5 min) Task 3: pupils draw their own pizza in the left circle.
- (10 min) In pairs, play pizza shop: the cook asks "What would you like?" and draws the order in the right circle without looking. Swap, then compare the two pizzas.
- (5 min) Task 4: read the ice cream flavours; pupils say which one they would like.
- (5 to 10 min) Task 5: pupils write their order, pizza and dessert.
Adaptations
[S] Model one order on the board first, with the topping pictures next to the words.
[A] The cook asks "Do you want some olives?" and the customer answers.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil of page 1, in colour or black and white. Pupils need a pencil and colouring pencils. Page 2 holds the teacher notes: keep it. Pupils should know please and a few food words; the toppings and flavours are taught on the sheet. Put the finished pizzas on the wall for a class pizza menu.
