Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

A two-page printable that goes with the Now You Say It episode How Old Are You?: Mila turns eleven and her friends bring a present, a card and a balloon. Pupils name ten things in the scene, write their own age, then colour the party, with the teacher key on page two.

Pedagogical guide

The ten words are concrete things the picture shows, so a true beginner meets them with the object in front of them. It is Mila's birthday: she is eleven, and there are eleven candles on the cake, so counting the candles with the class brings back the episode's own number question ("How old is Mila?" "She's eleven.") before pupils answer it about themselves.

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Count the candles on the cake together, then play the episode's game: point at a child and ask "How old are you?"; a pupil answers for them, "I'm ten."
  2. (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils write the word for each numbered thing from the list.
  3. (5 min) Pupils write their own age on the last line.
  4. (5 min) Correct from page 2.
  5. (10 min) Colouring.

Adaptations

[S] Read the word list aloud and let pupils match number to word.

[A] Fold the word list away and let pupils write from memory, then check with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.
