Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This sheet teaches 22 home words: the rooms of a home, from kitchen to garage, and the things in them, such as wardrobe, armchair, cooker and mirror. Pupils name the rooms and the furniture from pictures, then read Lily's text about her unusual home, a narrowboat on a London canal, and answer six multiple-choice questions. They match each room with what you do there and complete twelve sentences, unscrambling the letters given in brackets. The last task, the hardest, is Lily's message to her friend Emma, where each gap is a choice between three home words.
Pedagogical guide
The words move from recognising to using: pictures first, then the words in Lily's text, then new sentences, then a full message where every option is a home word. The scrambled letters give the words in a new way after several word boxes. Each task tests words only, never grammar, and every item has one answer. The grammar stays at beginner level: the present simple of be, have, live and love, and there is / there isn't. Wardrobe, armchair, cooker, garage, fridge and sofa are above A1 in our word lists, taught here because they name the topic.
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Show a picture of a house on the board; the class names the rooms they know.
- (10 min) Activities 1 and 2: pupils write the word under each picture. Some words in the box have no picture.
- (10 min) Activities 3 and 4: read Lily's text aloud, then pupils tick the right answers.
- (5 min) Activity 5: pupils match each room with what you do there.
- (10 min) Activities 6 and 7: the scrambled words, then Lily's message to Emma.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.
Adaptations
[S] Do page 1 with a picture of a real house on the board.
[A] Pupils write four sentences about their own home with words from page 1.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy per pupil, three pupil pages. Page 4 is the answer key: keep it. To take it further, pupils draw and label a plan of their dream home, or describe an unusual home (a treehouse, a lighthouse) to a partner.
