Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
This grammar sheet teaches be going to + verb to talk about plans: I'm going to, she isn't going to, questions (Are you going to swim?) and short answers (Yes, I am. No, she isn't.), with tonight, tomorrow, this weekend, next week and next summer. Pupils read a video call in which Kiran and Beth talk about their holiday plans, find the missing words and read the rule, given in a box. By the end, they can say what they are going to do and ask a friend about their plans.
Pedagogical guide
Page 1 is the video call, with a picture of Kiran and of Beth: Kiran is going to visit his grandparents in Scotland and swim every day; Beth is going to stay at home and make a surprise cake for her dad with her cousins. Pupils find five missing words in sentences from the call. Then they read the rule, given in a box in short lines with the key words in bold: am, is or are + going to + verb, isn't, no -s on the verb after going to, and am, is or are before the subject in a question. Page 2 has eight sentences where pupils tick am, is or are, then the right form of the verb after going to; six sentences to write with going to and the verb in brackets; five wrong sentences about Kiran and Beth to make negative, so that each one becomes true; and five questions about them to answer with short answers. Page 3 has four sentences to turn into questions, then a puzzle in three parts: four friends, Femi, Lottie, Asha and Reuben, and four plans for the weekend, shown in pictures. Pupils read three clues, fill in a grid with ticks and crosses, write each friend's plan with going to and answer three questions. Every exercise opens with a worked example, except the puzzle grid. The answer key accepts both contracted and full forms (isn't or is not).
Suggested procedure
- (5 min) Ask a few pupils "What are you going to do this weekend?" and write two answers on the board.
- (10 min) Read the video call aloud; pupils find the missing words.
- (5 min) Read the rule in the box with the class; pupils find examples of it in the text.
- (10 min) Page 2: pupils tick the right words and write the sentences with going to, then make the sentences about Kiran and Beth negative and write the short answers.
- (5 min) Page 3: pupils make the questions.
- (10 min) Puzzle: in pairs, pupils use the clues to fill in the grid, then write the plans and answer the questions.
- (5 min) Check with the answer key on page 4.
Adaptations
[S] Pupils read the video call aloud in pairs, one as Kiran and one as Beth, before the tasks.
[A] Pupils write three sentences about their plans for the next holidays.
Materials & prerequisites
One copy of pages 1 to 3 per pupil. Pages 4 and 5 are the answer key and teacher notes: keep them. Pupils need am, is and are, the present simple, and the words for the family, the holidays, sports and the days of the week. To take it further, groups write a puzzle of their own with four classmates and four plans, and swap it with another group.
