Pedagogical Guide
Objective & content
A two-page printable that goes with the Fish and Chips episode Walk a Dog: five numbered animals (dog, cat, mouse, bird, horse) for pupils to find and label, then the picture to colour, with the teacher key on page two. By the end, pupils can name five animals without a word bank.
Pedagogical guide
Five pins, not the usual ten to sixteen: the series teaches four to six words per episode and the sheet checks exactly those, all at A1. Chips's own little dog is left out of the picture on purpose, so "dog" has one answer. Watch for "mouse" and "horse" (the same "-se" ending) and for "bird" (the "ir" sound).
Suggested procedure
- (3 min) Play the episode's test: point at a number and ask "What's this?"; pupils answer "Dog!", "Cat!"... like Chips.
- (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils copy the right word from the word list onto each numbered line.
- (5 min) Correct from page 2, animal by animal, saying each word aloud before writing it.
- (10 min) Colouring.
Adaptations
[S] Do the pointing game first, then let pupils draw a line from each number to its word in the list instead of copying it.
[A] Fold the word list away: pupils write the words from memory, then check with a partner.
Materials & prerequisites
Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.
