Pedagogical Guide

Objective & content

A two-page printable that goes with the Fish and Chips episode Go to School: six numbered school objects (bag, book, pen, pencil, desk, chair) for pupils to find and label, then the picture to colour, with the teacher key on page two. By the end, pupils can name six everyday school objects without a word bank.

Pedagogical guide

Six pins, not the usual ten to sixteen: the series teaches four to six words per episode and the sheet checks exactly those, all at A1. Each object is drawn once, including Chips's own pencil left out of the picture on purpose, so every word has one answer and no pupil can guess from a second copy. Watch for "pen" and "pencil" (pupils who know one often say it for the other) and for the vowel in "desk" against "disk".

Suggested procedure

  1. (3 min) Play the episode's test: point at a number and ask "What's this?"; pupils answer "Bag!", "Book!"... like Chips.
  2. (10 min) Hand out page 1. Pupils copy the right word from the word list onto each numbered line.
  3. (5 min) Correct from page 2, object by object, saying each word aloud before writing it.
  4. (10 min) Colouring.

Adaptations

[S] Do the pointing game first, then let pupils draw a line from each number to its word in the list instead of copying it.

[A] Fold the word list away: pupils write the words from memory, then check with a partner.

Materials & prerequisites

Page 1 printed for every pupil, plus coloured pencils. Keep page 2, the teacher key. Black and white printing is enough and is what the sheet is designed for.
